Excerpt – Their First Meeting…
That evening, after pictures are taken on the dock below, we return to where the ceremony took place. The space has been transformed, and a long banquet table overlooks the water and sunset view. The flowers and items that once flanked the aisle now create a stunning centerpiece on the table, lending a romantic and intimate atmosphere.
I realize there are named place settings, and the second I see my name, he bumps into me. I also notice his name is right next to mine—again.
He sighs and walks away, settling alone on a bench under a tree with sprawling branches to the left of the property.
Someone grabs my hand from behind and tugs me away from the table. Maya laughs as she leads the way to Pierce under the tree.
“I’ve been trying to introduce you two since Friday night. Have you gotten a chance to meet each other yet?”
“Not really.” I force a smile.
Pierce rakes his fingers through his overgrown chestnut hair and does the same, shaking his head.
“Well,” Maya continues, “allow me to introduce you two. Gigi, I’d like to introduce you to Pierce Kole, Jada’s brother-in-law, and Pierce, this is my close friend Gigi Welch.”
“Hi.” He looks at me, and for the first time, he holds my gaze and doesn’t look away.
I look to respond to Maya in time to see her winking at me while she merrily skips away.
I return my gaze to Pierce.
“Look,” he interjects before I can say a word, “I’m not a child, and I know when I’m being set up, and unless you just want a fuck, I’m really not the guy you want or need in your life right now. The only reason I’m here is because Jada and Jonathan practically forced me to, but if I had my way, I’d really prefer to be left alone right now.”
For a second, I’m flabbergasted.
“Wow. Rude…Nice to meet you, too, Pierce Kole. You know, we all go through rough times. Trust me when I tell you that I understand that better than most, but that’s not an excuse to become a monumental jackass to someone you’ve just met—someone who’s never done a thing to you. That’s just not fair.”
“You know what, Miss Bubbly, life’s not fair, and I’m doing you a favor. The sooner you get that, the better off you’ll be.”
“Just because you’ve chosen to become a cynical asshole and be a jerk to someone who’s simply being polite to you, it doesn’t mean that I have to go down the same path you’ve chosen. And furthermore, what the hell makes you think that I’m looking for a man in my life right now? That said, trust me when I tell you, I’ve had enough jerks in my life to last me a lifetime, and I refuse to let you or any other members of your Asshole Extraordinaire Club back into my life.”
I turn to walk away then stop and look him in the eye. “Good riddance, Mr. Jackass.”
